Protein studies are a key part of successful drug discovery practices. Many conventional experimental strategies, like one protein-one techniques, can be both expensive and time consuming, creating logistical challenges in research and development. As current successful approaches often require a fast and efficient method of screening a significant number of biological compounds in a parallel manner – also known as high throughput screening, or HTS – proceeding can be very difficult without access to the appropriate technology. For optimal results, all possible sequence combinations for a stated number of residues that constitute an epitope, or the part of the antigen to which an antibody attaches, should be synthesized. However, the number of permutations that should be tested increases exponentially as the peptide grows longer, creating a large range of possible combinations that must be evaluated. For researchers without access to a wide library of peptide sequences, this process can be prohibitively complex, potentially stalling or halting drug development.
